I was having issues with TPA slowdown on my phone which I always suspected was due to Facebook being a fat ass (SGS isn't that powerful compared to modern handsets), you can't just kill it because it comes back and keeps persistent services running in the background (even with notify off), the best solution I've found is to the app 'Greenify' which forces apps into a hibernation state.
This stops them consuming resources and because it only hibernates the app, it won't try and re-launch it in the background.
Give it a go, it needs root though.
