Cannot Pause the game without losing the ball

I've paused the game twice now in Mars attacks; gone into the settings features on the PS4 only to return 5 or so mins later to find the game still paused, yet i have lost the ball and it now asks me to shoot a new ball.

Whats the point of having the pause button? Does this happen on all tables or just Mars?

try pressing the start button instead of the menu button.

Thanks for your reply.

There's no start button on the PS4 - only options and share buttons. Both pause the game... The game will pause, but if i leave it for a certain period of time, and then unpause, the ball will have been lost and i will have to start again.
