Crash/freeze when accessing tables I don't own?

I just started playing with the Steam Mac version. I haven't purchased any table packs yet. When I try to go to any table other than Arabian Nights, which I thought would let me play a demo version, TPA crashes, everytime, with the spinning pinwheel of death. Is this a known issue?

I'm now having the same problem - any fix for this? I've tried everything I can think of, deleted and re-downloaded the game, deleted prefs and other apps, but nothing works. It played fine before the last two updates. Anyone find a fix for this? Anyone else having this problem? The Steam PC version and Mac App Store versions play fine.
