I know nothing of programming but I know that in some games there are ways to make games work more smoothly when you're able to allow the program to use more RAM. Can this be done in order to avoid the game from slowing down from time to time?

The only time I remember this being done was on old 386 PCs with MS-DOS, where you could allocate RAM. Modern Macs seem to handle memory allocation pretty well. It's more helpful to simply have more RAM in your computer, period. Currently, 8 gb is the minimum.

You're thinking of the Mac OS 9 and previous days when you could set a memory allotment. Mac OS X performs auto memory allotment. It uses as much memory as it needs. Thus, the more memory you have and the fewer other programs/tasks you have running will help increase performance on any programs/tasks that are running. So before playing a game like TPA or SPA, quit all other apps.
