The Tale of the Hand

I notice on IPDb that some of their table images were provided by someone who had a table with no hand (just the ring that would normally hold it in place). Another, later different table image has an aftermarket hand which is a different shape from the original. I also notice in another thread here that back in 2014 someone said "Come on, the hand is much cooler when it's moving!" and someone else noted that TPA never uses aftermarket mods in its renditions, which implies that at least one operator modded the hand to make it move.

Does anyone know enough of a history of this table to explain the hand discrepancies? Was it common to tinker with the hand to make it move? Did the hand detach and get lost easily? et cetera.

(I'm fascinated by this kind of stuff, like the cleavage stickers on the two Elvira tables and so on.)
