I've finished modding? it. As per my original idea, I drilled a hole in each side and inserted 2 new buttons, unconnected the L1/R1 buttons on the arcade stick and connected them to the new buttons.
I don't think it warrants it, but I have taken a few pictures to show the results, if anyone has any questions
