While I love his WMS games I do think he might have just been a one trick pony, perhaps he only had one good design or maybe a victim of his own success. Maybe its being constricted to a license that sapped his mojo. If you look at the prototype overlay for wizard blocks it is very UN Lawlor looking. How much of that was the needs to design around the central monitor gimmick and how much was a chance to get creative I don't think anyone will ever know. I imagine if you are the designer of the best selling game ever and you are being tossed a license and a deadline you probably go back to the well of what has worked and stick to it. Unfortunate. Gophers was the first PL game I didn't outright love, and its not all because of annoying voice tracks, its fine but I don't go out of my way to play it. My best designer vote is easy. Barry Oursler Designed one of my all time faves Cyclone, (And Space Shuttle which I hate) had solid games across 3 distinct SS eras and was very prolific. His best quality though is that he is all over the map with design, sometimes a hit (Cyclone, Junkyard, Gorgar, Dr Who, PIN*BOT) and also some stink bombs (Popeye, Harley) but the man took chances. Takes some serious stainless steel balls to risk a career like that. Is a lack of a style a style?
