Add player without going to the menu?

My friend has a PS3 and it seems like the number of players setting is lost between games (same table and same session). Do we have to go the settings menu every time or is there a shortcut button to add another player when starting up?

Yes, and well over a year later you also still need to change the controller in use to #1 or share a controller. Every other PS3 turn based game that I have supports multiple controllers. Golf, mini-golf, bowling, Zen, etc. all support multiple controllers. Its such a minor thing but it is also expected.
